After raising the bar to unprecedented heights in 2009 with Joris Voorn and Will Saul’s stunning additions to the series, EQ Recordings’ Balance series returns for the new decade with yet another standard-setting mix from one of the most sophisticated and inspiring names in techno: Agoria.

The man otherwise known as Sebastien Devaud wasn’t bitten by the dance music bug until he was out of his teens, but once he began hunting imported 12”s from the US and Germany in his native France, there was no turning back. His production career began in 1999, with his debut album Blossom and first compilation following in 2003 – and it was clear even in those early days that a serious new talent was emerging. Blending the throb and groove of deeper, stripped-back techno with a keen sense of musicality, emotion and atmosphere, his is a sound that transcends beyond mere dancefloor disposability.

Agoria explains his intention for this intricate compilation: “The concept of both CDs is all about balance. Literally. In my mind a balance is not a middle position; it’s a perfect equilibrium. I’m trying to be as close as possible to this idea. I have tried to find this fine line where the balance is just right.”

To accomplish this perfectly-weighted contrast, he’s cherry-picked from a myriad of genres and subgenres in his “beat open-minded” fashion, combining a wealth of material from newcomers across the spectrum (including no less than 12 exclusives) with more established producers, classics and unknown gems from his broad musical past, and put it all together in an unconventional, challenging manner. “In the end, more than a DJ compilation, this is a manifesto of my passion for music and for mixing” he explains.

This superb compilation is as deep and rewarding as a well-woven novel, the dénouement of the story unfolding as the mix evolves through Agoria’s musical DNA. Yet another essential addition to the compilation series that is fast becoming the new benchmark for ambitious DJs and demanding listeners alike.

TOUR DATES:

Sounds and Finely Tuned present the 7th annual We Love Sounds winter festival,
touring nationally between 4 – 14 June 2010. Last year’s festival saw sellout
shows in all cities and the 2010 lineup truly takes the event to the next level.

We Love Sounds and the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend have a long tradition
in ensuring the festival party season continues in full force, into the middle of
the calendar year. We Love Sounds is firmly established as the largest winter
festival in the country.

This year’s festival features two of the world’s largest electro labels each programming
and hosting their own arena, as well as one of the largest trance brands in the
world presenting their own dedicated space at We Love Sounds.

Steve Aoki, who destroyed Australian clubs last November with his stage diving
antics, will be bringing the DIM MAK bus to town (on steroids), showcasing one of the
globe’s hottest labels in a large scale festival arena format not to be missed. DIM MAK
And Friends arena will include the likes of Crookers, Steve Aoki, Laidback Luke and
more Dim Mak artists to be released shortly.

Canada’s Tiga, among the coolest cats in the business, will be bringing PLANET TURBO
to We Love Sounds, a Turbo Records showcase of all proportion, featuring the likes
of Tiga, Felix Da Housecat, Zombie Nation live, The Proxy live and more to be announced.

GOD’S KITCHEN returns to Australia after the sellout Boombox tour, this time bringing
with them #8 in the world, Markus Schultz, #10 in the world, Gareth Emery, showcasing
the new wave of super star trance DJs in their own dedicated arena. More international
trance artists to be announced shortly!

Holland’s Laidback Luke, (many say unofficial 4th member of the Swedish House Mafia),
and now a firm favourite in Australia, returns for his second consecutive We Love Sounds.
Get Physical label bosses and partners with Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y return to Australia
to promote their soon to be released artist album, and will be debuting their full live
show.

Here is just a taste of the We Love Sound 2010 lineup to get your juices flowing…

Seth Troxler’s top-drawer DJ, remixing and production skills, as well as his highly praised releases on labels including the Ghostly International and sub-label Spectral Sound, have helped him attract considerable interest and great bookings in his home city of Detroit and his current surroundings in Berlin.

After the success of their night at the Berlin club Watergate, the paths of Ellen Allien und Seth Troxler crossed once again. Seth was spontaneously given the honour of making a Boogybytes CD. After agreeing euphorically and without hesitation, Seth took the time to carefully reflect on his new environment in Berlin: “I wanted to do something which would set itself apart from all the trends, and yet paint a picture of this city and portray it the way I experience it.”

Seth’s particular way of combining the most varied of musical elements is shown both in his fitting track selection and in his remarkable mixing technique. Not only are the individual remixes artfully arranged and intertwined, but single elements are also occasionally reemployed as material in a sound montage. Seth merges tracks into one another almost imperceptibly whilst constantly creating new angles in the way they overlap and retreat from one another. Other songs, on the other hand, follow one another abruptly and yet completely seamlessly.

TOUR DATES

1st April - Likes Of You - Melbourne

3rd April - Likes Of You - Perth

Sydney show to be announced very soon!

There are few artists on the planet that are able to traverse genres and release music for such a wide range of labels, yet still have their own unique sound, many world’s leading labels have recognized this, with Tim signing tracks and remixes on the likes of Get Physical, Cocoon, Dirtybird, Renaissance, Four:Twenty, Trapez, Cr2, Sci‐tec, Southern Fried, Trapez and many more.

Singles such as ‘Kitch‐In’ ‘Mr.Dry’ ‘Revox’ & ‘Exercise’ have become anthems in the house and techno scene over the past 2 years. Whilst a string of high profile remixes for the likes of Tiefschwarz, Cassius, Claude Von Stroke, The Audio Bullys, Steve Lawler, Radioclit and more have further helped establish Tim as one of the most talked about producers of the past 2 years.

Since their beginnings nearly 22 years ago, they have continued to craft an immersive, hypnotic, ritual-like concert experience. As The Guardian (UK) said: “The Necks can find eternity in a grain of sand.” Their completely improvised concerts on acoustic piano, bass and drums have the room ringing with sound and the audience utterly mesmerized.

In the last couple of years, The Necks have been going from strength to strength; they have completed several tours of Australia, Europe and the US, performed at the Nick Cave-curated ‘All Tomorrow’s Parties’, collaborated in an acclaimed foray into theatre with Back to Back Theatre’s ‘Food Court’, performed with legend Brian Eno in a series of three sold-out concerts at the Sydney Opera House, and released their fifteenth album, 2009’s ‘Silverwater’.

Truly they are one of Australia’s most highly regarded musical ensembles, and critical acclaim worldwide reflects a growing realization that these three Australians have created a way of making music unlike anything else. Highly respected music writer Richard Williams, in his recent book ‘The Blue Moment: Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and the Remaking of Modern Music’ said “the new music I would find it hardest to do without, fifty years after ‘Kind of Blue’, is that produced by The Necks.”

Fortunately for Australian fans, The Necks undertake annual tours of their homeland, and it is with great pride that they announce their upcoming run of dates for February – March 2010.
Highlights of the tour include a reprise of The Necks’ legendary presentations at Sydney’s Metro and the Brisbane Powerhouse, return visits to favoured haunts such as Melbourne’s Corner Hotel, Byron Bay’s Community Centre and Perth’s Charles Hotel, and a season at the Adelaide Festival with Back to Back Theatre’s Food Court.

Long-term fans of this unique band come back time after time for their annual fix, as The Necks slowly conjure their sound mountains out of thin air, but if you haven’t heard them before, come along and check them out. You’ve never known two hours to pass so quickly.

****
The Necks Live Experience:

“A performance by The Necks is a kind of religious experience” THE AUSTRALIAN

“Absolutely riveting…how three musicians can sound like eighteen is a mystery… extraordinary magical sounds emerged from the ensemble…the way The Necks do this with acoustic instruments is nothing short of miraculous” FINANCIAL TIMES (UK)

“The Necks draw your attention to the music instead of the means: you never get the idea that they’re playing for an hour to prove that they can do it, or to showcase a glut of ideas, but simply to give you the pleasure of focusing on music in extreme detail” PITCHFORK

“Tonal, accessible, and yet profoundly challenging… The Necks are singular… Yielding things no one else does” THE WIRE

“The Necks communicate a fierce energy and warmth at the same time. Their music is a thrilling, emotional journey into the unknown.” THE GUARDIAN

****
Great reviews for ‘SILVERWATER’ (Oct 2009 Fish of Milk - The Necks’ first studio album since 2006’s ARIA award-winning ‘Chemist’):

“Head and shoulders above the rest…the finest studio album in their 22-year history.” Sydney Morning Herald

“Austerely elegant” The Guardian (UK) 5 stars

“Maybe they should take a further leaf out of Morton Feldman’s book, and keep it rolling for another hour or two more next time?” Uncut Magazine
Rated Number 25 in Wild Mercury Sound’s Top 100 of 2009 (Uncut Magazine)

“If you know The Necks, you know you need this. If you’re new to The Necks, please do yourself a favor and check this out. Next to seeing them live (which some of us have been lucky enough to do, oh my god they were good), this will demonstrate quite effectively why we hold them in such high regard.” Aquarius records, USA

“The chemistry between Chris Abrahams, Lloyd Swanton and Tony Buck remains fresh and unhindered after over two decades playing together. Unplanned as always, the musical ideas that flow from this original position of nothingness are a testament to their philosophy (and a damning indictment of others who start with far more but end with so much less). Haunting, evocative, engrossing and astounding at each and every turn, Silverwater will defy any attempts at description but outstrip any expectation.” Alternative Media Group, Australia: (4 & 1/2 stars) The Necks
