The Tiger & Me are architects of singalong goodtimes, dark-edged pop-leaning folk and side-leering swagger. Their feverish live shows wring the full gamut of emotion from their audiences as frenzy gives way to restraint and menace becomes charm.

Their debut album, ‘From a Liar to a Thief’, released in April 2010, won praise from audiences and critics alike. Come 2011 and with a ground-swell of anticipation thanks to notable appearances at Port Fairy Folk Festival, The Apollo Bay Music Festival, The Falls Festival and The Hills Are Alive, the excitement for new material is palpable; thankfully The Tiger & Me have just the tonic, three doses of it in fact.

On July 9 at Melbourne’s The Toff in Town, The Tiger & Me launch The Howling Fire, the first of a series of three EPs. The separate releases explore a descent into madness, the ensuing struggle, and ultimate embrace of insanity. Produced by Myles Mumford, the new recordings represent an organic evolution for the band, infusing more indie and classic pop influences into their signature sound.

The Howling Fire tour starts this Saturday the 9th of July at Melbourne’s The Toff in Town.

The Howling Fire tour dates:

Saturday July 9 - The Toff in Town, Melbourne with Sal Kimber and the Rolling Wheel
Friday July 22 - Melbourne Cabaret Festival with The Nymphs
Saturday July 23 - Melbourne Cabaret Festival with The Nymphs
Sunday July 24 - Melbourne Cabaret Festival with The Nymphs
Saturday July 30 - The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Adelaide with Cheer Advisory Council
Friday August 5 - The Wrong Crowd, Geelong
Saturday August 20 - The Basement, Sydney with Peregrine and Evan & The Brave

Grammy Award-nominated rapper, actor and poet Mos Def has announced The Ecstatic Tour. His first ever headline tour of Australia, The Ecstatic Tour has been titled in support of his current album of the same name. Released June 09, ‘The Ecstatic’ (his 4th studio album to date) just earned Def a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album. Rolling Stone magazine named it the seventeenth best album of 2009.

With special guests TBA, The Ecstatic Tour is the first time Mos Def has been in OZ since he was out this way with DJ Shadow in 2009 and as aforementioned, this is his first and ‘only ever’ headline Australian tour.

Mos Def began his music career, forming the short-lived group Urban Thermo Dynamics (UTD) with his younger brother DCQ and his younger sister Ces. Signed to Payday Records, the group only released two singles but in 1996, Def emerged as a solo artist, working with De La Soul and Da Bush Babees before releasing his own first single, “Universal Magnetic” which was a huge underground hit. After signing with Rawkus Records, he and Talib Kweli released a full length album under the band name Black Star.

As a solo artist he has released the albums ‘Black on Both Sides’ in 1999, ‘The New Danger’ in 2004, ‘True Magic’ in 2006 and ‘The Ecstatic’ in 2009. In recent news, for his next album, Def has just signed on with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint. (Via Consequence of Sound.) West and Mos have collaborated several times, most recently on the G.O.O.D. Friday track “Lord Lord Lord”. Mos has taken on something of a spiritual adviser role for Kanye as of late — in a recent Tweet about his “Power” remix verse Kanye wrote, “Mos helped me find the ‘old me’ lyrically.”

Initially recognized for his musical output, Mos Def’s screen work since the early 2000s has established him as one of only a handful of rappers who have garnered critical approval for their acting work. Brown Sugar, Monster’s Ball, The Italian Job, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the HBO made-for-TV film Something The Lord Made have been particularly acclaimed by critics.

A Detroit native whose move to Berlin was ahead of its time, for the last four years Shaun Reeves has been enthralling European audiences with his own highly distinctive mixture of American house, both classic and contemporary, and the deepest, most cutting edge aspects of minimal techno and tech-house. In addition to playing in Berlin’s celebrated Panorama Bar, Watergate, Arena Club, and the legendary Beatstreet loft parties, he has appeared in Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), T-Bar (London), Wolf + Lamb (NYC), Bunker (NYC), End Up (San Francisco), Cocoliche (Buenos Aires), La Sala (Bogota), Harry Klein (Munich), and many other clubs and parties in Europe, North and South America.

While searching deep in the back catalogue of house and techno for forgotten tracks that sound decidedly fresh and exciting, Shaun remains committed to pushing all genres of dance music forward. His is music not just for the dance floor, but also for the body, soul…and brain. As the recent resurgence of interest in the border between house and techno makes all too clear, Shaun has always been one to set musical trends rather than follow them.

Best known for his collaborative work as Uli Kunkel and with Miss Fitz, Shaun has recently been working with fellow Detroit-native Seth Troxler, a collaboration that will appear on Raum, as well as with Argentina’s Dilo. Recently he has begun to produce on his own, crafting elegant house music that has learned from the best aspects of minimal, but bringing back an element of emotional depth often lacking from that genre. And as friends and family know, Shaun’s re-edits are highly sought after by Djs and music lovers, often stripping the music to its barest elements but in the process bringing out a depth and complexity lacking in the original.

Some names seem to have been there from the very moment you fell in love with dance music. Chicane is one of them.

For nearly 15 years, UK producer Nick Bracegirdle has been part of the scene, hitting high peaks with last year’s hit single ‘I bruise easily’ which featured Natasha Bedingfield on the vocals.

With a chain of chart hits under his belt - ‘Don’t Give Up’ (feat. Bryan Adams), ‘Offshore’, ‘Saltwater’, ‘Stoned In Love’ (feat. Sir Tom Jones), more recent hits include ‘Poppiholla’ and ‘Hiding All The Stars’. After three successful artist albums, 2009 saw the release of Chicane’s ‘Best of’ album, a prelude to his new one: ‘Giants’.

When it comes to great heights, Chicane’s been there alright . Working with A-class artists such as Bryan Adams, Tom Jones, Maire Brennan from Clannad and Keane, made his music attract a wide audience. ‘Giants’ displays that diversity, from the ambient opening track ‘Barefoot’ to the housey radio-hit ‘Come Back’, warm progressive ‘Middledistancerunner’ in collaboration with Owl City singer Adam Young and enthralling classic interlude called ‘Titles’. Chicane has crossed all boundaries and shows that those 15 years have only made him more creative.

On ‘Giants’, Chicane returns with a new dose of energy for the crowds, intimate home-listening moments and timeless, gigantic highlights.
