Brisbane will join 350 cities across the globe to celebrate the worlds largest international music event, Fête de la Musique on Sunday 21 June and Brisbane City Council is inviting musicians, performers and venues to register now.
The inaugural Fête de la Musique Brisbane held last year saw 270 of the city’s most exciting musical acts perform virtually every style of music across 35 performance locations.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said Fête de la Musique Brisbane is the peoples music festival aimed at filling the city with free music.
With no auditions, no critics, just simply a celebration of music, Fête de la Musique Brisbane is accessible to any musician or performer regardless of their style of music or ability, Cr Newman said.
Performers that register do so in the unique spirit of this event - free music by the people, for the people - and I urge all music artists to get on board.
Whether you are a hip hop artist, a yodeler, an opera diva, a reggae band, a school choir or you play a musical instrument you are all invited to register for this exciting festival.
Performances are free and held outside of traditional music venues so you can expect to see a guitarist playing blues in a library, a harpist entertaining commuters at the train station or a reggae band playing in a museum.
Throughout the CBD and in suburban areas of Brisbane public spaces such as shopping centres, libraries and museums will be sounding off to the tune of Fête de la Musique Brisbane.
Artists register for an unpaid 25-50 minute slot at a registered venue.
Prospective venues for Fête de la Musique Brisbane in 2009 include the South Bank Parklands, Palace Cinemas, Brisbane Powerhouse, the Queen Street Mall, the Brunswick Street Mall, various suburban shopping centres, local parks and many more.
Cr Newman said in a bid to see music in places it is not normally seen any venue from a butcher shop to a fruit market is also invited to join Fête de la Musique Brisbane .
We want to see music in as many places as possible but venues participate in accordance with the international charter of this event - to provide free music everywhere, he said.
Artist and venue registrations close on 8 May 2009.
Open to both amateur and professional musicians of all ages and backgrounds, Fête de la Musique Brisbane is presented by Council in association with Alliance Française, Brisbane Marketing, The Courier-Mail and NOVA 106.9 FM.
Fête de la Musique is a signature event in the Brisbane 150 calendar. The 12 month program of events for the city celebrates its vibrant and colourful past, present and future since separating from New South Wales governance in 1859.
