Joining us for a chat today is Raven Jones, lead guitarist from the Brissy band Glasshouse.
BrisbaneMusic : Hi Raven, thanks for joining us, first of all, tell us a little about the band. What’s the story behind the name ‘Glasshouse’?
Raven Jones : We grow up in glasshouses, we were part of a biological experiment conducted by clandestine organisations.
BM : That must have been a tough childhood. You guys just finished up your ‘Tour Of Mass Destruction’ on Feb 16th.Can you tell us a bit more about that?
RJ : We played in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Toowoomba. The response keeps getting better with each tour; we had great fun hanging out with The Inches in Melbourne and City Riots in Brisbane. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour; also Melbourne is a great city to visit.
BM : As a band, you seem to be very interested/involved in politics and the situation the world is in. If you had the entire world listening, and you were given 5 words to deliver your message, what would it be?RJ : Global warming, action or destruction?
BM : Your LP ‘Restore Factory Settings’ has been given some rave reviews in local press, and with good reason..it’s a great achievement. Tell us a little about the creative / recording process behind the LP.
RJ : We spent over a year writing the album and about 3 months in pre-production and recording. We had a great time recording at 301 in Byron and we made a record the 4 of us are completely proud of. We are already writing the next record which we will begin recording by the end of the year. The process of writing and recording with these 3 other creative people is always surprising and rewarding.
BM : You guys are also noted for retailing your music online via your own website. Tell us about that experience? What are the challenges? Would you recommend it to other artists? Are there other ways for fans to get hold of your music?
RJ : We approach all elements of this band with a very DIY attitude. We have a clear, concise vision of the world we want to create with our music and we know how to go after we want. The Internet marketing is just an extension of the way we act as a group. We do things on our terms, with conviction and a awareness of the greater picture and how we want to affect it.
I love that we live in an age where media can be exposed to people all over the world by independent record labels such as the label we are on – Bonefinger Records. I honestly think that technology has allowed for a much greater freedom of creativity and band/listener interaction. Who knows where this will lead…
BM : So what’s next for Glasshouse?
RJ : We are writing songs for the new album and planning the next National tour, we are playing with The Red Paintings on March 2nd for QUT “O” Week. Then we are off to Tasmania, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand in the next few months. We are going to be touring with some great bands and good friends so I look forward to it.
BM : Thanks for your time
RJ : Thanks.
